During the Heritage Open Days weekends in September we have two fabulous events planned that visitors will enjoy. One of these focuses on creating shawls from sheep fleece, across a four day weekend. For this we would like to lure into the Alex as many spinners, weavers and knitters/crocheters as we can. Its a group project, so if you have the skills or interest in getting involved in fleece preparation then email Chris at artatthealex@gmail.com All ability levels are welcome but this is not a teaching activity, its a joining in activity.
The poster above shows the way we expect the activities to pan out, but we will of course be flexible. I will be expecting some spinning to be required on all days but weaving and making shawls to be worked on principally in the last 2-3 days. Worldwide Spin in Public Day is the the third Saturday in September. That would be a great day to have as many spinners here as possible.
Here is a link to the listing on the Heritage Open Days website, you can see some of the local history surrounding a similar challenge. The Throckmorton Coat challenge was an ambitous challenge in 1811 – a bet won to make a coat on a mans back from a coat on a sheep’s back in the space from dawn to dusk.
Please do spread the word and note that Art at the Alex is insured for volunteers to work here.
